Signs You Need a New Serpentine Belt

Over time, your serpentine belt can wear down and get damaged by heat, friction, and general use, but here’s what you can look for to know it’s time for a replacement!

Engine Overheating: Your serpentine belt keeps your water pump going, which gives your motor the coolant it needs to let you drive longer and farther. But when your serpentine belt slips or breaks, it can’t get coolant to your engine, leading to overheating.

A/C isn’t Working: The last thing you want is the A/C not working on a hot day, but your serpentine belt may be to blame! This belt powers the A/C compressor, and when that goes out, so does the A/C!

The Smell of Burnt Rubber: When your serpentine belt starts to cause excess friction, and your nose can smell burning rubber, it’s time for a belt replacement. It’s a sign that yours is out the door.
