Why is Oil Needed Within an Engine?  Think of all the parts that go into your vehicle’s engine. Think about how all these parts must work in unison for you to drive your car, truck, or SUV. There’s the intake manifold, cylinder head cover, engine block, exhaust manifold, water pump, pressure relief valve, head gasket, and of course, you’re engine’s pistons and multiple smaller parts like gaskets, seals, and O-rings.
For the most critical parts of your vehicle’s engine to function properly, they must be properly lubricated. Proper lubrication ensures that every part within your engine can interact with the adjacent part without creating excess friction. Too much friction leads to extremely high heat and an eventual catastrophic failure.
When your engine doesn’t have proper lubrication, then the metal parts of your engine (mainly the pistons) will grind up against the interior of the engine block. That metal-against-metal interaction creates friction that leads to heat that eventually leads to a cracked engine block or other serious damage.
Over time, the oil in your engine will start to accumulate debris, dust, dirt, and contaminants like little metal shards. Eventually, your engine’s oil will lose its viscosity. This means that your engine’s oil won’t be able to properly lubricate your engine’s most critical components.

This is perhaps the most common question when it comes to an oil change. Simply placing new oil into your engine does nothing to remove the older oil.
